Dear Mr. Eggleston:
We would first like to thank you for the beautiful and dignified
service provided our family in the aftermath of our mother, Mrs.
Elise Roundtree's death. Not only was there sensitivity and comfort in
your business dealings but attention to detail comparable to funeral
arrangements costing many thousands of dollars more.
Moreover, the cosmetic skill you performed on the deceased was
beyond our expectation, particularly as you had not seen her as a
vibrant healthy person, neither did you have a photograph to guide
you. Finally, realizing that the projected cost of the funeral
would, for the most part, be a cost upon us you were ready with
advice and assistance that greatly lessened our financial burden.
For all that you did, thanks a million. We look forward to working
with you in other endeavors.
With fondest regards,

OCTOBER 10. 1986
DEAR CARL,
DO YOU REMEMBER
THIRTY YEARS AGO WHEN YOU WERE SIX YEARS
OLD. AND YOU WERE ASSIGNED TO MY FIRST
GRADE CLASSROOM? WELL. I REMEMBER IT
VERY VIVIDLY, AS IF IT WERE YESTERDAY.
YOU CAME INTO MY
CLASSROOM WITH YOUR FATHER. YOU QUIETLY
TOOK A SEAT. YOU DID NOT SMILE, AT SIX
YEARS OF AGE. YOU WORE ON YOUR FACE, AN
EXPRESSION OF SERIOUSNESS.
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR YOU
WERE WELL - MANNERED. WELL - BEHAVED.
AND YOU ALWAYS STRIVED TO DO YOUR BEST
WORK.
LITTLE DID I
REALIZE THAT I WAS ABOUT TO INSTRUCT A
LITTLE FELLOW WHO WOULD ONE DAY BECOME A
GREAT LEADER AMONG HIS PEOPLE IN THIS
COUNTY. OR PERHAPS IN THE STATE OF
VIRGINIA.
I WOULD LIKE TO
THINK THAT I HAD A PART. HOWEVER SMALL.
IN SHAPING YOUR DESTINY TO THIS END. I
AM PROUD OF YOU. I SALUTE YOU - CONGRATULATIONS!
MAY GOD CONTINUE TO
WALK BY YOUR SIDE TO BLESS AND DIRECT
YOUR PATHWAY AND YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS
FOREVER.
SINCERELY YOURS,
MRS. ERNESTINE
HERNDON
